    1

Open Settings on Your Android Phone

    ~15s
Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon, or find and open the Settings app in your app drawer. Settings is usually a grey or white icon that looks like a gear or cog.
    2

    Find Accounts or Google Settings

    ~15s
Scroll down and tap Accounts (on some phones this may be called Passwords & Accounts, Users & Accounts, or similar). Tap Google, then tap your Google account email address.
    3

Make Sure Contacts Sync Is On

    ~22s
You will see a list of items that sync with Google — Contacts, Calendar, Gmail, etc. Look for Contacts and make sure the toggle is turned on (blue or green). If it is off, tap it to turn it on.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can tap the three-dot menu or Sync Now button to force an immediate sync rather than waiting for the automatic schedule.

    4

    Verify on Google Contacts

    ~15s
On your computer, open a web browser and go to contacts.google.com. Sign in with the same Google account. You should see all of your Android contacts listed there. If they appear, your sync is working correctly.
    5

Restore Contacts on a New Phone

    ~32s
When you set up a new Android phone and sign in with your Google account, your contacts will be automatically downloaded to the new device. You do not need to do anything special — sign in with the same Google account during phone setup and your contacts will appear within a few minutes.

    Warning

Only contacts saved to your Google account will be restored automatically. Contacts saved only to your SIM card or to the phone's local memory will not sync. If you have SIM contacts, use your phone's Contacts app to copy them to your Google account before switching phones.

Your Android phone's contacts contain years of saved phone numbers and email addresses. If your phone is lost, broken, or replaced, those contacts could all disappear — unless they are backed up to your Google account.

When your contacts are synced to Google, every contact you save appears at contacts.google.com on your computer and automatically appears on any new Android phone where you sign in with the same Google account. This makes switching phones or getting a replacement device completely painless.

Most Android phones are set up to sync contacts to Google automatically during the initial setup, but it is worth confirming this is actually happening. This guide walks you through checking and turning on the sync.

The process is slightly different depending on the brand of your Android phone (Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, etc.), but the general steps are the same across all Android devices. The settings are found either in the phone's main Settings app or inside the Google Contacts app.

Google account sync uses very little data and runs in the background — you will not notice it happening. Any time you add, edit, or delete a contact on your phone, the change syncs to Google within a few minutes.
