Helpful Tips for Using Chrome on Android

Chrome on Android has useful hidden features — tab groups, reading mode, data saver, and address bar at the bottom. Here's what most people miss.

    1

Save articles to your reading list

    ~15s
When you find an article you want to read later, tap the three-dot menu (⋮) → Add to Reading List. Access saved articles later by going to MenuBookmarksReading List.
    2

Enable Reader mode for clean reading

    ~18s
On articles with a cluttered layout, look for a book icon in the address bar and tap it. The page reloads with only the article text and images — no ads or sidebars.

    Quick Tip

Not all websites support Reader mode — the book icon only appears when the feature is available for that page.

    3

Create tab groups to stay organized

    ~15s
When viewing your open tabs (tap the number button next to the address bar), long-press a tab thumbnail and choose "Add tab to group." Name the group (Shopping, News, Recipes) to keep related tabs together.
    4

Cast a webpage to your TV

    ~15s
Connect to the same Wi-Fi as your Chromecast or Smart TV. Tap the three-dot menu → Cast. Select your TV. The web page appears on the big screen — good for sharing photos or videos with family.
    5

    Clear browsing data regularly

    ~21s
Tap the three dotsHistoryClear browsing data → check "Cached images and files" → tap Clear data. This frees up storage and can speed up Chrome. Do this monthly for best performance.

    Warning

Clearing cookies logs you out of all websites. If you want to stay signed into sites you use regularly, uncheck "Cookies and site data" and only clear the cache.

Google Chrome is the most widely used browser on Android phones. While most people use it just for browsing, Chrome on Android has several features that make reading, saving, and organizing web content much easier.

    Reading list

: Save articles to read later without needing a separate app. In any article, tap the bookmark icon (star) → "Reading list." Access your saved articles by tapping the three dots (⋮) → Bookmarks → Reading List.

    Reader mode

: For cluttered websites with lots of ads, tap the book icon in the address bar (appears on supported sites) to switch to a clean reading view with just the article text and images.

Move the address bar to the bottom

: Go to chrome://flags in the address bar → search "Address bar" → enable "Chrome Home" or "Bottom Omnibox." Now the address bar sits at the bottom, making it easier to reach with one thumb.

    Tab groups

: When you have many tabs open, long-press a tab thumbnail → "Add tab to group." Organize tabs by topic — news, shopping, recipes — to reduce clutter.

Cast a tab to your TV

: If you have a Chromecast or Google TV, tap the three dots → "Cast." Your current Chrome tab streams to the TV — great for sharing a website, video, or article on a large screen.

    Data Saver

: Go to Settings → "Lite mode" to compress web pages and save mobile data. Useful if you have a limited data plan.
