Android 15 is Google's operating system update released in late 2024. It is available for Google Pixel phones and many Samsung, OnePlus, and other Android devices (though the timing varies by manufacturer).
Here are the most useful changes in Android 15:
Theft Protection (biggest new feature)
: Android 15 includes three powerful anti-theft tools. Theft Detection Lock uses AI to detect if your phone is suddenly snatched and locks the screen automatically. Offline Device Lock locks the phone if someone tries to disconnect from the internet (a common trick thieves use to prevent tracking). Remote Lock lets you lock your phone from any browser even if you do not remember your Google account password.
Private Space
: A hidden, locked area on your phone where you can install apps that do not appear in your main app list or recent apps. Great for keeping sensitive financial, health, or personal apps private.
Improved Do Not Disturb
: Smarter filtering so priority calls still come through even in Do Not Disturb mode.
Better Health Connect
: Improved integration between health apps — fitness, sleep, and medical data can share more reliably between apps.
Satellite Messaging (Pixel 9)
: Google Pixel 9 can send emergency texts via satellite when there is no cell service, similar to iPhone's satellite SOS.
App archiving improvements
: Android can now archive apps you use rarely (keeping your data) and restore them automatically when you need them — freeing up storage without losing anything.
