    How to Book Amtrak Train Tickets on Your Phone

    The Amtrak app lets you search routes, buy tickets, manage reservations, and show your mobile ticket to the conductor — no paper needed. Here is how to use it.

    Download the app and create an account

    Search "Amtrak" in the App Store or Google Play and install the free official app. Tap "Sign In" → "Create Account." Enter your name, email, and password. Creating an account is free and lets you save trips, earn Guest Rewards points, and store payment information for faster checkout.

    Search for a train

    Tap "Find Trains" on the home screen. Enter your departure city or station, destination city or station, travel date, and number of passengers. Tap "Search." Amtrak will show all available trains on that route with departure times, arrival times, and travel duration.

    Quick Tip: Amtrak stations are listed by city and station name — type the city first and let the app suggest the correct station.

    Choose your seat type

    Each train shows ticket options: Coach (standard seats), Business Class (more legroom, at-seat service on some routes), and Roomettes or Bedrooms (private sleeping accommodations on long-distance trains). Compare prices and select the option that fits your needs. Note that some long-distance trains include meals with sleeping accommodations.

    Apply discounts before paying

    During checkout, tap "Add Discount" or "Promo Code." If you are 65 or older, select "Senior" for the 15% discount. If you are a AAA member, there is a separate AAA discount. Veterans and active military qualify for a 10% discount. Enter any promotional code you have. Apply the discount before entering payment.

    Warning

    Senior discounts must be applied during booking — you cannot add them after purchase. The conductor may ask for ID confirming your age.

    Show your mobile ticket

    After purchasing, your ticket appears in "My Trips" in the app. When the conductor comes to check tickets on the train, open the app → "My Trips" → select your trip → show the QR code on your screen. The conductor scans it. No printing required.

    Quick Tip

    Download your ticket to your phone before boarding in case you lose cell signal on the train. The ticket is stored offline once downloaded.
