AirTag vs Tile: Which Tracker Is Right for You?

Lost your keys again? AirTag and Tile are small tracking devices that help you find your belongings. Here's how they compare so you can pick the best one.

    1

    Choose Based on Your Phone

    ~24s
If you have an iPhone: get AirTag. It works natively with Find My, requires no separate app, and has the largest tracking network. If you have an Android phone: get Tile. The Tile app works on Android and iPhone, and Tile's network uses both.

    Quick Tip

AirTag only works with iPhone 11 or later running iOS 14.5+. Older iPhones can still use AirTag but without Precision Finding (the feature that points you directly to the item).

    2

    Set Up AirTag (iPhone Users)

    ~16s
Remove the plastic pull tab from the AirTag to activate it. Hold it near your iPhone — a setup card appears automatically. Tap "Connect," name the item ("Keys," "Wallet," "Purse"), and the AirTag is registered to your Apple ID. Open the Find My app to track it.
    3

Set Up Tile (Android or iPhone Users)

    ~17s
Download the Tile app from the Google Play Store or App Store. Create a free Tile account. Open the app and tap the "+" button to add a new Tile. Hold your phone near the Tile and follow the on-screen instructions to pair it. Name the item.
    4

    Find a Lost Item

    ~25s
For AirTag: open the Find My app on iPhone and tap the "Items" tab. Tap your AirTag to see its last known location on a map. Tap "Play Sound" to make it chirp. If nearby, tap "Find Nearby" for Precision Finding — an arrow guides you directly to it. For Tile: open the Tile app and tap the tile for your lost item. Tap "Find" to make it ring or see its last location on a map.
    5

Attach the Tracker to Your Belongings

    ~29s
AirTag fits into many key rings, wallet inserts, and luggage tag holders — accessories are available from Apple and third parties. Tile comes in different shapes: Tile Mate (has a keyring hole), Tile Slim (credit card thin for wallets), and Tile Sticker (adhesive for attaching to remotes or sunglasses cases).

    Quick Tip

Attach the tracker to something you check regularly — keys, wallet, or a bag you carry daily. Trackers have a range of about 30 feet for making sound — the map location shows where the item was last detected.

AirTag (made by Apple) and Tile are small tracking devices about the size of a quarter. You attach one to your keys, put one in your wallet, or slip one into your luggage — and if that item goes missing, you use your phone to find it. Both trackers work well, but they have real differences in how they work and which phones they are compatible with.

The biggest factor in choosing between AirTag and Tile is what kind of phone you own. AirTag is designed specifically for iPhone users and works with Apple's Find My network. If you have an iPhone, AirTag is the more seamless choice. If you have an Android phone — or if the person you are buying a tracker for uses Android — Tile is the better option.

AirTag uses Apple's "Find My" network, which is a massive crowd-sourced tracking system. Every iPhone in the world (including strangers' iPhones) can detect your AirTag's Bluetooth signal and relay your item's location back to you anonymously and privately. This makes AirTag extremely effective in populated areas — cities, airports, shopping malls — where iPhones are everywhere.

Tile has its own community network that works across both iPhone and Android devices. Tile's network is generally smaller than Apple's, which can make it less reliable in rural areas, but Tile works on any smartphone and has some models with GPS built in (at a higher price).

AirTag costs around $29 for one, or $99 for a four-pack. Tile prices range from $25 for the Tile Mate up to $50+ for the Tile Ultra with GPS. Both require small button batteries that last about a year.
