Writing can feel hard — especially when you need to write something formal, like a letter to a doctor's office, a complaint to a company, or a heartfelt message to a family member. Many people feel stuck not knowing how to start or worry about getting the wording just right. AI writing tools can help with all of this.
An AI writing tool is a program you type a request to, and it writes a draft for you. You tell it what the message is about, who you are writing to, and what tone you want (friendly, professional, brief, detailed), and the AI produces a draft within seconds. You can then read it, change any wording you want, and send it along.
The most widely used free AI writing tools are ChatGPT (chat.openai.com), Google Gemini (gemini.google.com), and Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com). All three are free to use with a free account, and all three work the same basic way: you describe what you need in plain English, and the AI writes a draft.
You do not need to know anything about AI technology to use these tools. You do not need to be a good writer yourself. All you need is to be able to describe your situation. For example: "Write a short, polite email asking my neighbor if I can borrow a ladder this weekend" is enough information for an AI to produce a great draft.
These tools are useful for writing thank-you notes, formal complaint letters, emails to medical providers, notes to teachers or schools, responses to confusing legal or insurance letters, and much more. After the AI gives you a draft, you read it, make any changes you like, and use it.
